Dante is not a goofy devil hunter that is doing everything he does to pay the bills and just have fun here, instead he is a vulgar nihilist trying to live his life that gets dragged into saving the world because he is a chosen one of sorts. The main things people fuss about with this game from what I have seen are the characters and how they are portrayed. Not really that complicated of a plot, but it’s in the little details where things become a bit more interesting, for better or worse. Here, he learns that he is the offspring of both a demon and an angel known as a Nephilim, and that he and Vergil are the key to killing Mundus and saving the world. After a scuffle with the demon sent to kill him, Dante agrees to go with Kat to meet Vergil, the leader of The Order and Dante’s twin brother. Dante is just minding his own miserable business one day when he is greeted by a member of this group called The Order named Kat. Then, Mundus feels the Son of Sparda and Eva, known as Dante, is alive and kicking, so he sends out a demon to kill him. The game takes place in a random city that I have no clue what it’s called, not that it really matters, where we see the main antagonist of this game, a demon by the name of Mundus, gloating to his mistress about how he will have complete control of the world pretty soon. I think I’m going to try and get the more controversial aspects out of the way first, so let’s begin with the story. What better game than a one-off alternative take still retaining some elements from the main series that I will get a complete experience out of right off the bat? So what did I think of it? Meh. Thing is, at the time of me writing this, I still don’t have a copy of DMC 5, and since I like to go on binges with any complete series, I would have to find another way to get myself acquainted with what’s to come, or at least get my toes wet. Fast forward seven years later in 2020, all of the dust has settled and people are too busy praising Capcom too much to really bother with this game anymore, so now I think would be a nice and peaceful time to get check out the DMC series. To be honest, my first impressions from what I saw were that it just didn’t seem like it was for me, and keep in mind that this is back during the time I thought Shadow The Hedgehog of all games was cool. Even as someone who hadn’t played it, I was still a bored kid searching through the internet for whatever caught my eye, and since I enjoy video games, it was almost inevitable that I would run into what I saw. The 2013 Ninja Theory reboot that was eventually turned into an elseworld story thanks to DMC 5 six years later, DmC: Devil May Cry.ĭear lord, do I remember the backlash for this game back when it released. I am certainly more familiar with the series than I am with others that I haven’t crossed off my bucket list just yet, and that, combined with how I view reboots, remakes, and alternative takes of familiar works seems like the perfect grounds for me to start my DMC journey with arguably the most reviled and controversial entry in the series. Most of my experience with the series comes from my older brothers playing the games and me just watching them, random reviews of the games online, memes on Reddit and Tumblr, and the YouTube comment section busting their Judgement Nuts when DMC 5 and its special edition were announced. Devil May Cry is a series that I have a rather bare bones knowledge of.
